Ubuntu Linux 10.04 x86_64 worked out of the box on Acer Aspire 5551.
After installing latest Catalyst drivers version 10.6 from ubuntu edgers repository, screen brightness has ability to save its state. Lm-sensors works out of the box but shows only CPU temperatures to show GPU temperatures install latest k10temp module from lm-sensors site(this is needed only on pre 2.6.33 kernels). I recommend this laptop for every Linux users looking for fully compatible Linux laptop.
