Linux Compatibility

ScreenOKbrightness adjustment keys work
Optical DriveNot Tested
SoundOKIf you use Ubuntu, you will have major problems to get the sound working correctly. The problem is the Conexant 5069 chip. Here is the solution: You need to install Alsa 1.23.0 before, here the link: – [wks] But only *one* mic channel is working.
WirelessFAIL Needs proprietary wl driver, sees APs, but doesn't get IP via dhcp. – [wks] Ndiswrapper doesn't help! Instead, Install the proprietary driver automatically; choosing “system / administration / drivers” will find a “Broadcom-WLAN-STA Driver” which works perfectly (but not parallel with ndiswrapper). But … this driver will always activate your wireless network by default and turn the wifi hardware switch on. Pressing it in will result in … nothing.
BluetoothNot Tested [wks] Gnome: The Bluetooth applet switches Bluetooth on by default, even if switched off before shutting down the PC/Gnome.
ModemNot Tested
Card ReaderOK[wks] The Card reader is pretty slow, about 9 MBit/s.
TouchpadOK[wks] BUT Multitouch doesn't work
Fingerprint ReaderNot Tested
WebcamOK[wks] Works fine with “Cheese”.
ACPIPartially fails[wks] To make ACPI show your battery, you have to upgrade your BIOS to 1.10 (to be found at the Acer web pages). This also enables the wifi keys.

Notes marked with [wks] made by W. Kösters.

[wks] This laptop comes with pre-installed Windows 7 which doesn't allow to install a dual boot system. If you want to run a dual boot system, you either have to buy and install a regular Windows, or to run your second system (e.g., Ubuntu) from a removable medium – as long as you don't know how to force the Win7 installation to give you free space (I didn't succeed without damaging Win7). I now run Ubuntu from a 30Mbit/s-USB-Stick (Intenso High Speed) which works perfectly well. I also tried to run it from a 30 MBit/s SDHC (SanDisk Extreme III), but since the card reader is very slow, I discontinued this. With Ubuntu, the battery doesn't run as long as with MS W7 – about 4 hours only.

Tested with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 32bit desktop.
